The extra-wide platform increases the contact surface area between the shoe and pedal for efficient transfer of power. The wide bearing placement evenly distributes force. Combined with the lightweight and stiff composite body, it adds up to the PD-R550 maximizing your power every time you clip in.
The PD-R550 has a large entry target for easier engagement with the pedal. The wide spring tension adjustment range allows you to find your perfect tension so that you can clip in and out with confidence. At your mid-ride coffee stop, walk with confidence on the wide, low-profile cleats that don’t need special cleat covers for when you’re off the bike.

"These PD-R550 SPD SL pedals are a good value - I bought a bunch for my bikes when they were on sale. They are not that much heavier than Ultegra, so at this price I can live with the extra grams. I like that I can install these pedals with a pedal wrench versus an Allen Key bolt that the higher end pedals have. The wrench just seems to work better with less fuss. I feel the broad platform supports my foot better than speedplay pedals that I migrated from. The Shimano cleats are also very walkable, even on cobbled streets, and have enough float that my knees have not been sore. The pedal cleat interface does not squeak, which was a problem I had with Look Keos in the past. I am happy with the longevity of the cleats as well. The Speedplays were a lot easier to clip into, a year after switching to SPD-SL pedals I am still struggling to clip in every time when the traffic light turns green. It's more of a muscle memory issue than a fault with the pedals though, after riding Speedplay for 15 years."
"Received pedals and saw right away the cleats would not fit on my Shimano SPD cycling shoes. In description you should add a warning that SPD-SL pedals will not work with all SPD shoes, and include a photo of the cleats."
